Employment Opportunities The College Settlement of Philadelphia operates resident camp programs and Kuhn Day Camp offers day programs for 7-14 year old economically disadvantaged children from the metropolitan Philadelphia area. Many of these children live in difficult situations and face challenging problems in their daily lives. We offer them an enjoyable, educational summer camp experience. We are supported in part by the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and have been involved in interracial, intercultural camping since 1922. Our 235 acre facility includes two swimming pools, a ropes course, a small lake and several small streams, fields and woodlands. There are several pavilions and about twenty buildings including two nature centers, a dining hall, and cabins which serve as living quarters. The resident camp also owns and operates a 75 acre outpost in the central Pennsylvania mountains which sits amidst 6,000 acres of state game lands. Although the two programs differ slightly, their basic goals are the same:
Working a season at College Settlement Camp is more than just another job. Some of the benefits include:
Who Are We? The College Settlement of Philadelphia is over 100 years old, and was originally chartered as a Settlement House. In 1922 a camping program was added by Anna Freeman Davies in Horsham , PA to augment cultural, educational and recreational programs offered in the city. Summer programs offer 8 weeks of day, residential and adventure programs to economically disadvantaged campers 7-14 years old. In the fall of 1973, an outdoor school program was started to provide facilities, leadership and resources for a residential environmental education experience. Today approximately 50 Philadelphia area schools participate in our highly successful spring and fall programs. Why Join Our Team ? We offer opportunities for young people to gain extremely valuable work experience and job skills while working with an organization dedicated to providing positive environmental and social experiences for children from diverse backgrounds. Our programs have been nationally recognized, participants and former staff often crediting their experience here as one of the most formative of their lives. With both live-on and live-off campus positions, we have jobs suitable for many people - students, teachers or people wanting to spend a season doing a job that does make a difference. Summer Programs at College Settlement and Kuhn Day Camps We offer a variety of very successful programs developed for children ages 7-14 from the Philadelphia area. We recruit an international staff dedicated to working with underserved youth; a staff who are energetic, resourceful and committed to providing our campers and school groups with a positive, fun-filled, educational experience. College Settlement Camp provides 4 two-week residential sessions for campers. Campers enjoy traditional activities such as arts and crafts, sports, swimming, day trips, campfires and special theme days in a positive, energetic atmosphere where the emphasis is on fun for staff and kids alike! Kuhn Day Camp also offers long days filled with fun activities. The day camp program is very similar to that of it's resident sister camp, but offers 2 four-week sessions that run Monday to Friday each week. Campers are bussed to and from Philadelphia each day. Kuhn Day Camp is a great way for teachers and college students to enjoy all the fun of our programs without having to live in. Day camp has a few residential staff positions. Spruce Run Outpost - Older campers participate in a four day trip to the camp outpost, located in the beautiful Pocono mountains. Campers and staff participate in low impact camping activities that take place in and around our wonderful facility which abuts thousands of acres of state game lands. Teen Adventure Program-4 phenomenal twelve day trips for teens who previously participated as resident campers. Three trip leaders design adventure programs that take teenagers up and down the eastern US for hiking, biking, white water rafting and other exciting activities. Spring and Fall School Programs. . . During the school year, students and teachers participate in a whole range of academic, scientific and experiential education activities during their three day residential program. College Settlement Camp offers school groups Challenge Course activities to encourage cooperative, communicative and social skills. We also offer both high and low ropes courses as advanced programs. We recruit 5 teacher/naturalists to work with school groups and teach group building activities and environmental science curriculum. Our Camp Community is a very accepting one. We are tolerant of the differences among all people. We feel that the diversity among our campers and staff enhances the camping experience. |
