Reorganization Announcement

November 18, 2011 | The Board of Directors of Camp Management Corporation (CMC) is making every effort to make effective and efficient use of the full time staff. With the retirement of Executive Director Frank R. Gerome planned for May, 2013, CMC has taken a long hard look at our staffing structure, and has decided to make a change.

In preparation for the succession of the Executive Director, the Board of Directors of Camp Management Corporation has decided to reorganize certain aspects of the full-time staffing structure. Presently there are two Program Directors, each reporting to the Executive Director and each with their own select job responsibilities. The Resident Camp Director manages and supervises the Resident Camp and Spruce Run Outpost; the Day Camp Director manages and supervises the Day Camp and the Teen Adventure Program. Both administer the Outdoor School in Horsham. Each position is somewhat independent of the other, especially during the summer camp season. The Executive Director functions as the Camp Director in the day-to day operation of all aspects of the summer camp operation and select aspects of the Outdoor School in Horsham.

The planned reorganization will involve eliminating the two existing Program Director positions and creating two new positions. These new positions will be a Camp Director (CD) and an Assistant Camp Director (ACD). The CD will have overall responsibility for the management and supervision of all aspects of the Programs, which will include summer camp, outdoor school and weekend use of the Camps. The CD will also be responsible for food and health services. The CD will report to the Executive Director. The CD will be supported by the ACD.

The Executive Director will then, moving forward, primarily focus on the business aspects of the operation including, but certainly not limited to, fiscal management, human resources, fund development, public relations, recruiting, office management, community outreach, strategic partnerships, strategic planning, staff development, insurance, and facility management. The ED will no longer be a resident position.

The new CD and ACD will be resident positions. The CD will live in Laurel House (the current Executive Director will be moving out in January). The ACD will live in the Main House, which is attached to the back of Ferguson House. The Gate House will become unoccupied pending review by the Property Committee.

Both of the present Program Directors are invited to apply for the new positions. The Camp Director will be hired first, and then will directly participate in the hiring process of the Assistant Camp Director.

The timetable for the change is as follows:
November 18, 2011: Announcement of the reorganization
December 2, 2011: Resumes due for Camp Director
Week of December 5, 2011: Start of interviews for Camp Director
January 1, 2012: Commencement Date for Camp Director
January 31, 2012: Application deadline for Assistant Camp Director

We know that change is difficult; but as the Camp Management Corporation Board looks to the future, it sincerely feels this arrangement will make the most efficient and effective use of the staff.

Chris Weinrich, Chairperson, Board of Directors, Camp Management Corporation
Frank R. Gerome, Executive Director, Camp Management Corporation

Working at Our Summer Camps

The College Settlement of Philadelphia operates resident camp programs and Kuhn Day Camp offers day programs for 7- to 12-year-old economically disadvantaged children from the metropolitan Philadelphia area. Many of these children live in difficult situations and face challenging problems in their daily lives. We offer them an enjoyable, educational summer camp experience. We are supported in part by the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and have been involved in interracial, intercultural camping since 1922.

Our 235-acre facility includes two swimming pools, a ropes course, a small lake and several small streams, fields and woodlands. There are several pavilions and about twenty buildings including two nature centers, a dining hall, and cabins which serve as living quarters. The resident camp also owns and operates a 75-acre outpost in the central Pennsylvania mountains which sits amidst 6,000 acres of state game lands.

Although the two programs differ slightly, their basic goals are the same:
  • To develop and nurture a positive environmental ethic through activities that teach about the natural world.
  • To have a family/community atmosphere in which children and adults enjoy working and playing together.
  • To offer the opportunity to share, play, learn and work with children of all backgrounds, religions, affiliations, cultures and nationalities.
  • To provide a healthy and practical lifestyle through proper nutrition and practice of daily routine. We stress responsibility for oneself and concern for one another.
Working a season at College Settlement Camp is more than just another job. Some of the benefits include:
  • Work experience in education, counseling and social science.
  • Possible college credit.
  • Positive, non-discriminatory job environment.
  • Participation in progressive environmental education programs.
  • State-of-the-art training such as conflict resolution, wilderness first aid, life guarding and more.
  • Working in a dynamic, culturally diverse population of children.
  • Job references from a highly-respected educational organization.
  • Participation in adventure based programs.
  • Spending a season doing a meaningful job that is fun!

Who Are We?

The College Settlement of Philadelphia is over 100 years old, and was originally chartered as a Settlement House. In 1922 a camping program was added by Anna Freeman Davies in Horsham, PA, to augment cultural, educational and recreational programs offered in the city. Summer programs offer 8 weeks of day and residential programs to economically disadvantaged campers 7 to 12 years old.

Why Join Our Team?

We offer opportunities for young people to gain extremely valuable work experience and job skills while working with an organization dedicated to providing positive environmental and social experiences for children from diverse backgrounds. Our programs have been nationally recognized, participants and former staff often crediting their experience here as one of the most formative of their lives. With both live-on and live-off campus positions, we have jobs suitable for many people — students, teachers and others wanting to spend a season doing a job that makes a difference.

Summer Programs at College Settlement and Kuhn Day Camps

We offer a variety of very successful programs developed for children ages 7 to 12 from the Philadelphia area. We recruit an international staff dedicated to working with underserved youth; a staff who are energetic, resourceful and committed to providing our campers and school groups with a positive, fun-filled, educational experience.

College Settlement Camp provides 4 two-week residential sessions for campers. Campers enjoy traditional activities such as arts and crafts, sports, swimming, day trips, campfires and special theme days in a positive, energetic atmosphere where the emphasis is on fun for staff and kids alike!

Kuhn Day Camp also offers long days filled with fun activities. The day camp program is very similar to that of it’s resident sister camp, but offers 2 four-week sessions that run Monday to Friday each week. Campers are bussed to and from Philadelphia each day. Kuhn Day Camp is a great way for teachers and college students to enjoy all the fun of our programs without having to live in. Day camp has a few residential staff positions.

Spruce Run Outpost - Older campers participate in a four-day trip to the camp outpost, located in the beautiful Pocono mountains. Campers and staff participate in low impact camping activities that take place in and around our wonderful facility which abuts thousands of acres of state game lands.

Our Camp Community is a very accepting one. We are tolerant of the differences among all people. We feel that the diversity among our campers and staff enhances the camping experience.
