JOBS AVAILABLE Counselors are the heart of the camp program. Each counselor is in charge of a group of campers, leading them in a variety of activities. A counselor has overall responsibility for the campers' well being while they are at camp. Counseling positions at College Settlement are residential positions, while those at Kuhn Day Camp are non-residential. You must be at least 19 years of age preferably with one year of college training. You must also have a love and respect for children. Unit Leaders are responsible for the smooth operation of the individual units. They are the main link between the counselors and the camp administration. They have overall responsibility for counselor supervision and coordination of the units. A college degree is desirable as well as some experience in camping, teaching or other group-related work. Trip Leaders operate our outpost camp in the central Pennsylvania mountains, and lead our Teen Adventure program. We also hire 2 residential trip leaders who coordinate all day trips. You must be at least 21 years old, have a current drivers license,first aid and CPR certification. Environmentalists coordinate the environmental program. They train counselors in leading environmental activities, maintain the Environmental Center including care of our animals, and lead groups in environmental education activities. The Pool Directors supervise the instructional and recreational swimming program at camp. They coordinate a safe and educational pool area. You must be 21 years old and hold a current LGT or WSI Certification.
THE FOLLOWING NON-RESIDENTIAL POSITIONS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE: Maintenance Staff help with the upkeep of the grounds and buildings. Starting salary is minimum wage. You must be at least 18 years old. Cooks are responsible for preparing, cooking and serving food in our dining hall. You must be at least 16 years old. Kitchen Staff assist in our dining hall operations, preparing and serving food; kitchen cleanup. Starting salary is minimum wage. You must be at least 16 years old.
Starting salary for counselor positions is $1,800 with adjustments made relative to experience and qualifications. The College Settlement Camp is a twelve (12) month operation with about 50 people on the summer residential staff servicing 140 campers per session; and 18 people on the summer day camp staff servicing 100 campers per session. Our resident camp 2008 season runs from June 11 - August18 and day camp from June 16 - August 15. We want to emphasize the importance of making the commitment to the full camp season and we would be reluctant to hire staff who cannot do so. A bonus will be awarded to program staff who complete the entire scheduled summer season and hand in/file with the camp office all necessary paperwork (i.e. health form completed and signed by a physician) by the first day of the first session of camp. Our full time staff puts a great deal of time and effort into hiring for the summer, attempting to assemble a qualified, diverse and energetic staff. THE FOLLOWING POLICIES OF THE COLLEGE SETTLEMENT AND KUHN DAY CAMPS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR DECISION TO APPLY FOR A SUMMER STAFF POSITION. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE REQUESTING AN APPLICATION: Smoking: With the current evidence that smoking is dangerous and injurious to a person's health, employees are encouraged not to smoke. However, the Camps recognize that the decision to smoke or not to smoke is a personal one. All buildings except full-time residence staff homes are smoke free at all times. Due to the intense schedule, smoking by summer staff is not permitted during program hours. Smoking after "lights out" is permitted in designated areas. Please be considerate of the non-smokers if you must smoke. Alcoholic Beverages: Positively NO alcoholic beverages are permitted on the camp premises except in full-time resident staff homes. Illegal Drugs: Positively NO illegal substances will be permitted on the camp premises. Prescribed drugs MUST BE registered with the camp Health Provider and kept in the Health Center.
